Shashi Kapoor was a veteran actor who gave some unforgettable performances with box-office hits such as Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Chor Machaye Shor, and Deewaar. A member of the Kapoor family, he also acted in British and American films. During his career, he appeared in more than 116 films.
Born on March 18, 1938, to the illustrious and formidable theatre and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Sashi Kapoor was the younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. His early name was Balbir Prithviraj Kapoor which was later changed to Sashi Kapoor to suit his screen presence. He was born in Kolkata and attended Don Bosco High School in Matunga, Mumbai. Sashi Kapoor began his career as a child artist in plays directed and produced by his father Prithviraj Kapoor under the banner of Prithvi Theatres. As a child artist, he appeared in Aag (1948) and Awaara (1951).
He made his debut as a leading man in the 1961 film Dharmputra. He earned acclaim for romantic film Char Diwari (1961) and Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath (1962). He worked with the famous actress of his time and formed on screen pairs with Nanda, Raakhee, Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, and Moushumi Chatterjee in many films. The veteran actor is well-known for his roles in films like Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965), Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare (1966), Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1968), Sharmelee (1971), Deewaar (1975), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Junoon (1978), Shaan (1980), and Namak Halaal (1982) to name few.
The legendary actor during his lifetime acted alongside Pran and Amitabh Bachchan in many films. He shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan in movies like Deewar, Trishul, Kabhie Kabhie, Kaala Patthar, Silsila, Suhaag, Namak Halal and others. His iconic dialogue Mere Paas Maa Hai from the movie Deewar is still a household phrase. He also acted with Superstar Rajesh Khanna in 2 films Prem Kahani and Alag Alag. A versatile actor he acted in British and American films including The Householder, Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie, Heat and Dust, The Deceivers and Side Streets.
Honours and Awards
The brilliant actor earned a number of awards and recognition for his contribution to India film industry. He got National Film Awards awards for movie Junoon (1979), set around the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government. In 2015, he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Illness and Death
The actor-producer he was suffering from a kidney problem and was on dialysis for several years. Admitted to the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai for a chest infection he died due to liver cirrhosis on December 4, 2017. He was 79. Married to late English actress Jennifer Kendal, he is survived by his daughter Sanjana, and sons Kunal and Karan. His death was condoled by many eminent personalities.
